📚 What We’re Learning / Lo que estamos aprendiendo
We are learning about the Civil War in class.
Estamos aprendiendo sobre la Guerra Civil en clase.
Erik’s class is studying the Renaissance—he thinks it’s a little boring—but they are learning about important people and artists.

🏕️ 4th Grade Field Trip / Excursión de 4.º grado
One of our 4th grade teachers, Maestra Stephanie, is taking her class on an overnight camping trip to the Fossil Beds. We’re a little jealous! After all, 5th graders are the oldest in the school—what happened to respect for our elders?
ASB has been adding fun activities to our assemblies. Last week, we played “Sink the Ship” together on the same team—and we won! This month’s theme is cooperation, so the game helped us practice teamwork. Plus, kids don’t love just sitting and listening to lectures.
El ASB ha estado agregando actividades
divertidas a nuestras asambleas.
There was a chess tournament last month open to students from Kindergarten through 5th grade in The Dalles. Erik earned 2nd place, and another Chenowith 5th grader won the tournament. Great job to everyone who participated!

Dry Hollow ElementaryHello everyone,
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to share all the exciting things happening at Dry Hollow since our last visit. It’s safe to say we’ve been busier than a cat in a room full of rocking chairs!
📝 State Testing Season
State testing is officially underway! We’ve been working hard on our Language Arts assessments, and next week we’ll tackle the State Math CAT test. After that comes the Performance Task, and finally, our fifth graders will take the State Science test.
Phew!
After all this testing, our brains feel like a web browser with 19 tabs open, 3 frozen—and no idea where the music is coming from.
🌟 Word of the Month Assembly
In early April, we held our “Word of the Month” assembly. Congratulations to the students recognized for being cooperative!
Our new word is Courage—because sometimes courage means explaining to your parents that your report card is a character-building opportunity.
🎤 Talent Show Highlights
We had an amazing talent show this past month! Students wowed us with singing, gymnastics, and more.
Let’s be honest:
You know you're at a school talent show when the most dangerous act is the kid who brought a recorder from third grade.
All jokes aside, the performances were fantastic—Dry Hollow is full of talent!
🏫 School Spirit Day
On Friday, April 17, students showed their pride by wearing Dry Hollow Viking shirts. It was great to see so much school spirit on display!
✍️ Poetry Slam Champion
Our annual Poetry Slam was a big success. Congratulations to Irie Lucey, who took home the trophy and earned the title of Dry Hollow Poet Laureate for the year!
Great job to all participants—you made it a memorable event.
🎪 Reading & Math Carnival
The Student Council hosted a fun-filled reading and math carnival for K–2 students. Around 200 students enjoyed games, prizes, and popcorn!
This event was especially meaningful since younger students didn’t get to attend February’s Sock Hop. We hope this becomes a yearly tradition.
🏃 Jog-a-Thon Fun
Our annual Jog-a-Thon took place on Friday, April 24.
📊 YouthTruth Survey
All classes participated in the YouthTruth Survey. It took time and effort, but we made it through! We hope the feedback helps improve our school community.
🍒 Cherry Festival Parade
Dry Hollow Elementary was featured in the annual Cherry Festival Parade this Saturday.
If you see us, be sure to wave or give us a high five! A big thank you to everyone who helped design and decorate the float.
😄 Joke of the Month
Before we go, here’s a joke for you:
A young boy was staring at his homework and asked,
“Dad, can you help me find the least common denominator?”
His father sighed and said,
“Good grief, are they still looking for that? They were looking for it when I was in scho

Our students have been state testing this week in ELA, math, and science. We have been on a special schedule, with extra breaks and even snacks (thanks to our kitchen ladies) to keep us focussed.
Last Friday, students who earned Wildcat Coins had the opportunity to have an end-of-the-day reward which was an extra hour of recess or a movie in the library.
Students earn Wildcat Coins for:
Our school’s admin. Is working hard to raise expectations for behavior and performance but also have more incentives. Shout out to Mr. Datta and Ms. Kilgore for making the middle school stronger.
Our track season is in full swing. Today, our track athletes traveled to White Salmon to compete in their second meet of the season. There are over seventy athletes participating in track this season. The team is made up of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Volunteers at home track meets are always welcome.
TDMS yearbooks are currently on sale. Students can choose between a hard or soft cover option.
Our 6th graders will be attending Outdoor school next week. They will be going to Camp Monday-Wednesday next week. Our 6th graders are excited for this much anticipated annual opportunity.
In addition to Outdoor School, many groups have upcoming field trips planned for May & June, including AVID, and our 7th graders will be taking a field trip to Portland to visit the Zoo as well as their annual downtown mural walk.
Teacher appreciation week is May 4th-8th. We are excited to recognize our amazing teachers at TDMS.
Our ASB is hosting a Talent Show next month. Students are currently signing up and auditions will begin in a few weeks. The Talent Show will be on May 15th, in an afternoon assembly.
On Wednesday, May 20, from 5:30-7pm, TDMS will be hosting our annual Carnival night for the community and district families. There will be many booths from local community partners, free games, free food, a photo booth, and entertainment offered.

We had over 110 students from 6th–12th grade marching in the Cherry Parade on Saturday—and what an incredible showing it was.
Between mock AP tests, athletic events, festivals, competitions, and state testing, these students somehow found time to rehearse and come together as one strong, unified group.
Our wind players memorized over 5 minutes of music, and our percussion section took on more than 8 minutes—an impressive feat on its own, let alone with everything else on their plates.
Their dedication, work ethic, and pride in what they do truly stood out. We couldn’t be more proud of each and every one of them!
