TDHS Senior Jonathan Rodriguez Mota Awarded Prestigious OSU Engineering Catalyst Scholarship

Launched in 2020, the Catalyst Scholars Program was created by Oregon State University’s College of Engineering in partnership with key donors to support high-achieving students with significant financial need, helping ensure they are able to complete their degrees. The program addresses a growing need within the college, where enrollment and diversity have increased rapidly in recent years. Currently, nearly one in four engineering students demonstrates high financial need, as determined by Pell Grant eligibility. Among those students, nearly half come from underrepresented backgrounds, and many are first-generation college students.

While traditional financial aid provides important support, it is often not enough to carry students through to graduation. The Catalyst Scholarship is designed to close that gap, providing recipients with $10,000 per year for up to five years. The fifth year of funding allows students the flexibility to participate in valuable internship opportunities that further prepare them for their careers.

Rodriguez Mota plans to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Oregon State University, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Geovanni, who is currently in his second year in the university’s engineering program.

The surprise announcement was shared with Rodriguez Mota’s parents, as well as school and district leaders, including ASPIRE Coordinator Elaine Powrie, Superintendent Bernal, and Principal Williams, all of whom were present to celebrate the moment.

The Engineering Catalyst Scholarship is considered one of the most prestigious awards offered by the College of Engineering at Oregon State University. This year, only 15 students statewide were selected from a highly competitive pool of over 300 applicants.

“This recognition reflects Jonathan’s hard work, dedication, and bright future ahead,” said Superintendent Bernal, “We are incredibly proud of his achievement and excited to see all that he will accomplish.”

For Jonathan, the surprise announcement was more than just a recognition of academic success, it was a celebration of perseverance, ambition, and a bright future ahead.
