High School Mascot Committee

In 2012, the Oregon State Board of Education adopted a rule prohibiting Oregon public schools from using Native American names, symbols, or images as school mascots.  Schools have until July 1, 2017 to comply with this ruling.  During the 2013 Oregon Legislative Session, Senate Bill 215 was passed.  This bill allowed school districts to retain mascots with Native American references if there was a written agreement between the school district and a federally recognized Native American tribe located closest to the school district within the state of Oregon.  Governor Kitzhaber vetoed Senate Bill 215 in August 2013.  Therefore, North Wasco County School District Board of Directors is establishing the High School Mascot Committee.
